Dominican Sister of Peace Rita Carr, OP (93), a native of Wakonda, South Dakota, died on November 12, 2025, at Sansbury Care Center, St. Catharine, Kentucky. Sr. Rita is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A Dominican for 73 years, Sr. Rita earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education/Social Science from Siena College (Memphis, TN) and a Master of Arts in Administration/ Elementary Education from University of Nebraska (Lincoln, NE). She also received a diploma in Theological Studies from Regis College (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and certificates in Spiritual Direction and Pastoral Care. She ministered as a teacher at St. Patrick (Missouri Valley, IA); St. James (Kearney, NE); St. Patrick (McCook, NE); and Sacred Heart (Omaha, NE). Sr. Rita served as Principal/teacher at St. Anthony (Cedar Rapids, NE), St. Cecilia (Hastings, NE) and St. Philip Neri (Omaha, NE). In 1984, she served on the leadership team of the former Dominican Sisters of St. Catharine, St. Catharine, KY for four years. She then provided Pastoral Care/Hospital Chaplain at Good Samaritan Hospital (Kearney, NE). She continued in this position as well as ministered as Regional Coordinator of the Western Region for her congregation in 2007. In 2013, Sr. Rita moved to St. Catharine Motherhouse, St. Catharine, KY.
In 2017, Sr. Rita moved to Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), where she began a ministry of prayer and presence.
Arrangements are handled by Hale–Polin–Robinson Funeral Home in Springfield, Kentucky. The visitation begins at 3pm, Wednesday, November 19, at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel. The funeral will be held at 10:30am, Thursday, November 20, at Sansbury Care Center Chapel. Burial will be in the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
